Every year, the first Monday of September we celebrate Labor Day. This holiday is a “creation of the Labor Movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of american workers” according to the US Department of Labor’s website.
It can be traced back to an organized parade in New York City in 1882, called by the Union Leaders for what they called “Monster labor festival” on September 5th. That the day, apparently, the parade began with a few people and by the end of the day there were around 10,000 people who marched and joined the parade. Because of this, the press labeled this day as “the day of people” in that time.
Oregon was the first state to declare it a holiday in 1887, and soon New York, Colorado and Massachusetts followed it. The first Monday of September became a national holiday in 1896, by the President Grover Cleveland.
