Nowadays the life of a human being is disturbed by a thousand thoughts in a second. Society now demands people to be multitaskers. In addition, with the rise of mass media, internet and the social networks world, a person receives much more information than what he or she can even process.
With so much on our minds we lose ourselves planning ahead and bringing back memories, living constantly in the past and the future, but never in the present. We have forgotten what it is to just enjoy the moment.
For this, public speaker and writer Eckhart Tolle published in late 90s a book called The Power of Now. There he explains how the anxieties, tensions, stress and worries are caused by thinking about the future and how guilt, regret, sadness and all forms of non-forgiveness are caused by thinking too much about the past. He recommends being present every second.
Tolle proves how wrong we are by thinking that we have control of our lives and how that illusion only brings us pain. Therefore, he suggests some relaxation and meditation methods to anchor to the present. These ones include spending time in nature or just paying attention to all the sense perceptions associated with every activity you do, from breathing to washing your hands.
The origin of our emotional problems lies within our identification with our mind. Tolle says we have to embrace consciousness of ourselves in the moment; we have to detach from our thoughts and “watch the thinker” objectively. This will allow us to let go ideas that don’t belong to the present and keeping our mind still. In that moment, you establish a gap of no-mind in which you are completely alert and aware to divine inspiration.
